The name sapphire comes from the Latin "sapphirus," which means blue. Sapphires are available in virtually all colors, except for red (red sapphires are known as rubies), but blue sapphires are by far the most valuable. They are followed by pink and padparadscha (orange-pink or pink-orange) sapphires, which can also be quite costly.

The sapphire is sometimes called the "Gem of Destiny". When worn by a Virgo, it will bring out the best within them and help make their dreams come true.
