GUY FRIEND IS MOVING

Dear Jellybean,

I have a guy friend and we are very close. We love each other like brother and sister and it really hurts that he's moving. He's moving to Japan (I live in Colorado) and knowing that I could possibly never see him again is really starting to get to me. I know there's nothing I can say or do that will stop him from moving. What am I going to do? How can I keep in contact with him?

Dear Hurting On the Inside,

You can't stop him from moving, but that doesn't mean the friendship has to stop. Communicate your feelings to your friend, by being honest - that's what friends do! Tell him that his friendship means so much, that you love him like a brother, and that you're very sad he's going to be moving away. Let him know that even though he's leaving, you want to continue the friendship. Your guy friend probably feels exactly the same way.

Offer to write, email, share a blog, etc. after he's gone, so you two can stay in touch. Spend some time together, coming up with ways that you can keep in touch after he moves. It can be a project you work on, and a nice way to spend some of your precious time together before he goes.
